Shreve Chapel
Church was built in 1879 by the Members of the Shreve Chapel
Log Church.

Methodist Log Church was originally built in 1848.
Reverend John
Shreve was the Church's Founder.
Reverend John Shreve was
born in Louden County, Virginia on April 9, 1782. His father,
James
Shreve, who was born in
1754, lived to be nearly a hundred years old, fought in the Revolutionary
War,
crossed the Delaware with
George Washington, fought at Princeton and Trenton,
and in 1792, moved with
his family to Pennsylvania, bringing with him his father Caleb
Shreve.
James Shreve took up land
which was later owned by William Hixon, and still later by Mr.
Hixon's
daughter. He remained here
until 1809, when they all moved to Ohio with the exception of
his son,
John Shreve, and his father,
Caleb Shreve, who was too old to make the journey with them.
Caleb Shreve died February
10, 1810, and his remains rests in the old Shaver Burying Ground
near Rock Hill Church, which
is now being farmed.
John Shreve homesteaded
a large tract of land in Monroe Township on which he built his
cabin in
1806. His wife, Mary Hixon,
to whom he was married April 29, 1806, was born in Gossip County,
New Jersey, on December
27, 1787. Her parents moved to Pennsylvania the following year,
settling
near what is now called
Warfordsburg. Through Mary's influence, John Shreve was brought
to Christ
and became one of the Pioneer
Methodist ministers. Through his efforts, the Shreve Chapel Log
Church
was built. Together, Reverend
and Mrs Shreve erected their family alter and planted and nourished
Methodism in the region for 67 years.
Reverend and Mrs Shreve
had ten children, many of them are buried at Shreves Chapel Cemetery:
1. Mary Shreve who was born
June 15, 1808, and died August 19, 1843, married-
Henry Cunard who was born
April 17, 1799 and died on May 14, 1849.
2. Rachel Shreve who was
born Sept. 26, 1810, and died August 31, 1871 married John Ward
.
3. Daniel Shreve was born
September 04, 1812 and died August 14, 1875. He married-
Ellen Miller (daughter of
Jacob Miller), born April 04, 1817 and died February 08, 1898.
4. Mahala Shreve was born
December 06, 1819, and died on January 28, 1903.
Mahala married a Wemmer
/ Weimer.
5. Tabitha Shreve was born
December 12, 1822 and died March 08, 1906. She married-
Adam Conner, born in 1834
and died March 10, 1914.
Reverend John Shreve died
Jan 9, 1862, at his residence in Bedford County, Pennyslvania.
Mary Hixon Shreve died Aug.
31, 1871. Their remains rest in the Shreve Chapel Cemetery.
The funeral sermon was delivered
by Reverend J. W. Baker, assisted by several other ministers.
