The David & Nancy Errett / Barkman Family

Barkman / Errett / Fletcher

David Barkman was born in Southampton Twp., Bedford Co., Pa. on May 21, 1839. David was the
youngest son of Joseph and Elizabeth Fletcher / Barkman and a Great Grandfather of
Charles E. Hendrix - Hendrixpacpal@aol.com who has submitted the following information.

Joseph Barkman was about 10 years old when he moved with his family from Washington County,
Maryland to southern Bedford County in about 1802. In 1810 Joseph's family was living in
Southampton Twp., Bedford County, PA.

Elizabeth Fletcher's parents moved from Frederick County, Maryland at about the time of their
marriage in 1794. Elizabeth was born about 2 years later in Bedford County. In 1810 her family was
also living in Southampton Twp., Bedford County.

Joseph Barkman and Elizabeth Fletcher were married about 1814 in Bedford County. Over the
next 25 years, they continued to live in Southampton Twp. and raised a family of at least
12 children with their youngest son David being born May 21, 1839.

Most of David's older siblings married, raised their families, and remained in the Bedford County area.
Four siblings are buried in the Barkman Cemetery with their parents, and another five are buried in the
Fletcher Cemetery.

In about 1870, David, a carpenter by trade, at the age of 31 years, moved to Illinois and soon married
Nancy Jane Errett. The new couple moved to a farm near Edgington, Ill. Nancy was a daughter of
George and Susan Errett, who had previously lived in Westmoreland County, PA where Nancy was born on
June 29, 1847. The Errett family moved westward to Illinois in 1853, when Nancy was about 6 years old.

"Tintypes" or Daguerrotypes are some of the oldest means of photography. Charles
points out that these tintypes are very difficult to copy with realism, requiring the most
recent techniques to faithfully reproduce them. Thus they represent almost the entire
range of imaging technology from beginning to the present.)

David and Nancy Jane soon started their family with the birth of their first son Philip Fletcher Barkman, who was born in 1871 in Edgington, Ill. David may have named his son, Philip Fletcher in honor of his maternal grandfather who had died in 1854 or for his older brother Philip Barkman.

After living on the Edgington, Ill. farm for a period of about 5 years, David and Nancy with their
growing family moved on to Shelby County, Iowa where their last three children were born.
This photo (tintype) would have been taken at about the time of the families' move from Ill. to Iowa.
David and Nancy resided in the Shelby Co, Iowa area until their deaths in 1915.
