Lois Martin / Allison sent
an old photograph of the Roudabush Cemetery as it appeared many years ago.
Lois writes:
"While the Roudabushes
are not my ancestors, I lived next to this cemetery as a young
girl. The
cemetery now is in very
bad condition. The barn is still standing. A current picture
would not be good
as the tombstones have fallen
down and the weeds are taking over. The picture I am sending
is a
photo copy of an original
taken quite a few years ago. You can see the tombstones to the
left of the barn."
"I know the names of
the people who own this farm at present and some of the past
owners.
There was also a Roudabush
School there at one time. My Dad tells of it, and it would have
been located just below
the cemetery somewhere. "
"I helped a lady (after
corresponding through E-mail) locate this cemetery. She said
that she is led to
believe that her ancestor,
Hannah Bisel, is buried there. However, we found no proof
of it.
We counted about 14 graves
and here is the information from those stones that we were able
to read:
John
husband of Catharine Roudabush
died Dec 8 1859
age 51 yrs 8 mos 27 days
Catherine
wife of John Roudabush
died Apr 18 1888
age 78 yrs 7 mos 18 days
Their monument was made by C(?) Grunninger of Schellsburg."
"There were two bronze markers:
On the first was - Jacob
and Elizabeth Roudabush.
The second bronze marker listed the following names:
James H. Roudabush, George E.
Roudabush,
Mary Etta Roudabush, and Samuel Roudabush."
"These bronze markers were added years ago probably because
there were no names on some of the tombstones, or they were unreadable.
A lot of the tombstones are laying down, with grass covering
them. We had two of my husbands nephews helping us to lift them
up and see if there was any writing on them. It just worked out
that they happened to be in the area. The lady we were helping
would not have gone in there alone, nor do I think I would have.......Hope
this is all helpful to someone, sometime...."
Thank you Lois for sending
this information and the beautiful old photo!
